India: It’s Worse Than You Think

Most Westerners know nothing about India beyond vague ideas about Hinduism, yoga, gurus, and maybe a dash of Bollywood. To such people, this article will be a rude awakening. ...

I had first returned to India with the idea of improving it, but after 11 years, I realized that India was a sinking ship, with worsening and increasingly shameless corruption, degraded people, and a society that was falling apart. I had never met an honest bureaucrat or politician. I applied to emigrate to Canada and my application was approved in a record three weeks.

I now advise East Asian and Western corporations on investing in India. Most of what I tell them sounds to them exaggerated, unrealistic, and unbelievable. After much dance, drama, and a great deal of lost money, they begin to believe what I tell them. However, this learning is never institutionalized because of a refusal to understand India. This is a form of political correctness, a poison eating away the innards of Western values.

When I was a child growing up in India, I learned that “might makes right.” Power was often abused, with those in control acting as if they had a God-given right to exploit and dominate others. The display of authority could be so extreme that questioning it or expecting those in power to do their duty might lead to retribution. Those in authority seemed to believe that their positions were not for serving others but for personal gain.

People who showed respect appeared to have meekly accepted a lower, subservient position. Kind people had to hide their compassion, for being nice was seen as a weakness.

In India, I have rarely seen someone in authority take the initiative to solve a problem he was responsible for. When I was at university, an underaged boy who worked in the kitchen was raped and sodomized by the janitors. I reported the matter, but not only did no one in authority do what was right — something well within their power — the authorities and fellow students threatened me with severe consequences if I pursued the matter further. Devoid of empathy, they also made fun of the boy and me.

Yes, there is an element of sadism here. There is some degree of pleasure that Indians take in the pain suffered by others. The attitude of the authorities was like that of the high-placed Delhi bureaucrat who told me that his Black Label whiskey tastes so much better because he knows that most Indians can’t afford to drink it.

This confuses Westerners. If they had power, even if they were corrupt, in a situation where there was nothing to gain or lose — no bribes to receive since both parties were poor, and no risk of offending someone well-connected — they would do the right thing and book the alleged rapist. These Indians would do nothing, not even lift a finger, unless there was a reward: money or sex. Their apathy was bottomless.

The article goes on about how incredibly low-trust India is as a society.

True? Any people from India want to opine on this?

I have a feeling that "excessive paperwork" is a conduit or even a euphemism for "bribes."

Perhaps and several years ago I saw an article that claimed that it takes about 3 years to get a business license in India vs. 1 day in China and 3 months typically in the US. Because of crap like this. Waiting for your government forms and paperwork to go through the system. The article was also putting a spin on it being due to the fact that India is a pure democracy and not a republic.

If I recall it took me less than 4 weeks in Hawaii and they are snailish and run on "Island Time".

Why is there any business license requirement at all, beyond establishing the identity of the owners so that someone is liable for whatever illegal activity the business does?

Hawaii requires it for vacation rentals. You get tax ids to pay several types of taxes, like the hotel industry does.

Result of communism in action!
Lots gov employees are selected not based on the merit!
Most of them have no clue about the real world!
Long time ago, I applied for one to manufacture TVs and kept going to the office to get appointment. When I finally able to meet with official after bribing who immediately told me so many things are wrong with my application and threatening the consequences if I don’t get so many certifications.
That would take few years!
He gaslighted me that I was already making TVs! That means more bribes. Turns out, there are so many gov devils in line hiding for money ;)
Finally got paperwork only to realize that a small fraction of the sales should go to paper work to cover very high taxes and still have to pay monthly bribes for things which are not on the paper!
I am sure, things might have changed a little bit now but not enough to compete with other countries.

18 floor building and not a single toilet for him to use?

Why is India sooo fucked up when it comes to simple sanitation and potty training?

I bet the second thing the first Indian to step on the Moon does is defecate on it.

Nope. Internet bullshit pushed by Indians at NASA. In reality:

NASA insisted that the astronauts bring back all of their feces for examination, so after the Apollo astronauts finished doing their business, they had to seal up their baggies and "knead" them, as the report details, mixing in some all-important bactericide that would allow the excrement to get safely back to Earth.

Am i missing something, do some people not poop, or their shit doesn't stink?

India built 120 million new toilets in addition to existing ones. External pooping has decreased significantly. For a country that was made poor over 200 years, it is trying to improve.

If someone has urgency , shit happens. There are numerous such videos in usa n china. India is not even in top list per 100k population. Google bans shitting videos but lot of cities have numerous people on drugs n mental issues doing that in usa.
For a country well off, like usa this is crazy. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DL3zwHYTK2E/?igsh=OW5jbHd6MTczcmx4

@"KgK one" I don't like all the insults to India either.
274   WookieMan   2025 Jul 15, 9:50am

I've had to shit on the side of the road. Hence the term "shit happens" I keep 2 rolls of TP in the car. Usually I'd go into a cornfield or woods. Sometimes the emergency is enough that it's the two passenger doors open to block me and I just drop it on the shoulder.

Generally though I can get to a store or forest preserve. I think I've only had 2-3 road side dumps or the other option was cancel all plans and sit in my shit until I got home... not happening.

Camping is a different story. I've had to dig a hole and crap in at least 5 states camping. Boundary Water up in MN is a biggie. 5 days with no facilities.

Shitting on the street in an urban area, hell no. I live rural so I have options to get out and fertilize the corn.

That was true for poop in the Command Module, but some dispute as to what hapended with the diapers after landing on the moon, where their was an advantage is leaving weight behind for take off.
