All of you who live in the UK and many British Commonwealth countries are familiar with something called a television license. One is required to buy a license each year for each television in your home or place of business. Do not laugh at this. If you do not buy the license, the local police will come out, seize your televisions and sell them at auction.
San Mateo County, California has something like this. It's called a dog license. It has the noble goal of insuring that each domestic animal has its proper vaccinations. This is supposed to protect us from rabies, etc.
In practice it's the biggest pain in the world. One has to collect a lot of papers and send them in. Mistakes are made all the time. I properly renewed the dog license of Copernicus. Yesterday in the mail I got this red notice telling me that I had not renewed the license. This morning while working I had to open up the safe and get out the dog license file. I had to make a copy of Copernicus's current dog license. I then had to mail it to Texas. This all took 30 minutes of work that I could have used better elsewhere.

I don't believe in such rubbish. Here in PA they supposedly require one to buy an annual license. I've bought Mister Diesel exactly as many dog licenses as I've pulled building permits. Zip-zero lol

Why did you have to mail the licence to Texas?

Copernicus needed two forms of identification

Do your dogs go outside?

IMO, for a strictly indoor animal, you really don't need rabies shots.

The vendor used by many cities and counties around the US is based in Texas.

Don't know why this took half an hour unless you don't know how to use a copy machine. You only need one thing -- the rabies certificate. If you have a 3-year rabies certificate, you can either get a 3-year license or renew your license the next two years online.

Is a rabies certificate a requirement for a dog license?

In most towns, yes...

Our local animal shelter always has $5 coupons for rabies vaccinations at the counter. Without it a vaccination tends to cost almost $30. There are suppliers online where you can get many of the common vax shots for a few bucks a shot.

Typically it's the only requirement in many jurisdictions that have licensing for a neutered/spayed dog. Many dog clinics will do a 3-year rabies vaccine for fairly cheap -- local clinics do it for $18 if it's stand-alone, $10 if you're already getting other shots, and they mail me coupons every year and I get coupons in those coupon packs that come in the mail.

If you go to a vet, they'll do a "physical exam" and charge you $100 just for that (basically weighing the dog and checking its teeth) and will charge a multiple of the clinic's cost for each vaccine, so instead of $40-50-ish for all vaccines, the vet bill will be $300-400 just to get annual shots, plus they'll try to upsell you on garbage, "buy this organic petfood for only $50 for a tiny bag at 4 times the price at a pet store."

I had no idea I could DIY a rabies shot, but here it is:

For $3.50 + postage

I could probably use one of my cat's insulin needles as well.

How do rabid politicians get a license-oh I guess politics is the only field where anybody can run.

One thing if you do decide to home vaccinate your animals - ask about the proper way to vaccinate. There is such a thing as a vaccine associated sarcoma.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccine-associated_sarcoma

A friend of mine lost TWO cats to this.

New vaccine protocols have been put forth by the American Association of Feline Practitioners that limit type and frequency of vaccinations given to cats.[14] Specifically, the vaccine for feline leukemia virus should only be given to kittens and high risk cats. Feline rhinotracheitis/panleukopenia/calicivirus vaccines should be given as kittens, a year later and then every three years. Non-adjuvanted rabies vaccine (given yearly) is preferred to administration of adjuvanted three-year rabies vaccine products. Also, vaccines should be given in areas making removal of VAS easier, [15] namely: as close as possible to the tip of the right rear paw for rabies, the tip of the left rear paw for feline leukemia (unless combined with rabies), and on the right shoulder - being careful to avoid the midline or interscapular space - for other vaccines (such as FVRCP).[16] There have been no specific associations between development of VAS and vaccine brand or manufacturer, concurrent infections, history of trauma, or environment.[17]

Everyone is glossing over the TV license, I'm still trying to wrap my mind around that one. I guess it's like TV here, we pay every month (cable, satellite or whatever) to get TV signals, most of which are garbage and not worth watching. So in the UK you have to pay for garbage that is being broadcast over the air.

As to dog licenses - they want you to get one, but only if your animal gets caught (by animal control) or if there are some complaints (dog barking excessively at night), will they hunt you down. Just being a good owner, my dogs are up to date on all shots and get heartworm and flea medicine, but to caught up the extra money for a dog license? It's just a funding mechanism to fund animal shelter (pet killing place) and animal control - I don't buy them for my dogs.

If you want to see what a society without animal control looks like take a trip south of the border. When I visited TJ's crappier neighborhoods there were feral dogs everywhere. It seemed every female dog was either obviously pregnant or had a belly full of swollen teats. The male dogs were obviously intact.

I hate the dark side of shelters too but I focus the majority of blame for assholes who refuse to spay or neuter their pets for one asinine reason or another, then dump the inevitable results at the shelter, usually to be killed.

Not disagreeing with you. Here in Houston there are more feral dogs (and cats) then I can believe (especially in certain areas of the city). But I do know what happens to many of them. So very glad there are 'rescue' groups out there, but there are just too many animals.

That's what a crossbow was invented for...

To use on animal abusers?

The insecure men who live viscariously through their dogs balls have learned the lessons of absentee parenting quite well.
