The California Department of Motor Vehicles issued 2.3 million new IDs this year using a process that doesn’t meet the federal government’s standards, the DMV was told last month.

The development means Californians who got those Real IDs will need to provide a second form of documentation to prove their residency when their ID comes up for renewal. DMV spokesman Armando Botello said the federal government told the DMV during phone conversations about the issue that it would still accept IDs that didn’t meet the requirement in the meantime.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security sent DMV director Jean Shiomoto a letter on Nov. 21 saying California’s process for verifying ID applicants’ residency didn’t meet federal requirements.

California's goal is to allow mass illegal voting, because illegals mostly vote Democrat.

Get a passport. DMV here doesn't require a real ID for driving. It's if you're using it as your primary ID for domestic travel. Just use a passport when traveling.

Real ID is only for travel (air, cruise, etc) but not driving. Technically in IL you don't "have" to get it. Just renew your DL. Not sure about other states though. With 3 kids and wife and I we have a passport binder. We just bring that flying anywhere even domestic.

I don't understand real ID. I'm good till next June. Wife just renewed her's without issue as hers was due/expired November. No paperwork. Didn't even go to the DMV.

They've over complicated something that should be simple. We fucking let in illegals. Literally let them in. We let non voters vote. Yet we have to get some real ID thing? I see plenty of blacks in Mexico from that states. Somehow they blew $85 on a passport or whatever it is now.

Those who hoped the second Trump Administration would reject big spending, war, and restrictions on liberty continue to be disappointed. A new disappointment came when Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced her department would in May begin enforcing the REAL ID law.

Passed in 2005, the REAL ID Act created federal standards for driver’s licenses. The law requires everyone applying for a driver’s license to provide the DMV with his social security number, proof of legal residence, and two proofs of his home address. The REAL ID Act allows the Homeland Security Department to mandate, as it sees fit, the including of addition items in the related government database, including “biometric” identifiers. Biometric identifiers include personal data such as retina scans, fingerprints, and DNA.

People who doubt that this database will be used to violate the rights of US citizens should ask what a present-day J. Edgar Hoover — a former FBI director who was notorious for collecting private information on politicians and other prominent individuals — would do with a database containing personal and even biometric information on American citizens. They should also consider the IRS’s history of targeting presidents’ political opponents. Americans also have the threat of violations of their rights by hackers. The government has a poor track record of protecting data of US citizens.

REAL ID’s supporters deny the law turns state driver’s licenses into national ID cards because states have no mandate to implement REAL ID. However, citizens of any state that refuses to adopt REAL ID will be unable to use their state-issued IDs for boarding an airplane or riding on a train.

Once the initial uses of REAL ID are established, the government will then require REAL ID for other activities. For instance, local transportation authorities may be offered federal funds to implement REAL ID requirements for public transportation. Several pro-Second Amendment organizations oppose REAL ID because it could be used to monitor gun owners. There is nothing in the law prohibiting a future progressive Homeland Security secretary from requiring REAL ID for a firearms purchase. Imposing a REAL ID mandate on gun ownership would further the authoritarian objective of having a database containing the name and address of, and how many and what type of firearms are owned by, every law-abiding gun owner in the country.

REAL ID also menaces health freedom. One of the few victories for liberty during the covid hysteria was the failure of “vaccine passport” schemes to be more widely imposed. These schemes attempted to forbid people from returning to their normal lives unless they proved they were “fully vaccinated” against covid.

REAL ID was marketed as a weapon in the “war on terror.” However, Thomas Massie, the most consistent and courageous defender of liberty in the House of Representatives, pointed out that 9-11 hijackers used passports from their own countries. Rep. Massie wrote, “As long as the pilot’s door is locked and no one has weapons, why do you care that someone who flies has government permission?”

Like most post-9-11 security bills, REAL ID does nothing to protect the American people’s safety. It does, though, do much to endanger their liberty. REAL ID could even be the final piece of the transformation of America into a total surveillance society where government monitors, and thus controls, our actions. Americans who understand the danger must work to get the Trump administration to reverse its position.

Isn't a passport better? I get not everyone has one, but I can travel domestically or internationally on a passport no questions asked. Kids are a pain in the ass, but it's roughly $120 for 10 years for an adult. Roughly same amount for a kid but needs to be renewed every 5 years until they're 16.

I don't buy guns (yet) but if I have a passport and FOID card, which I do, I don't see any hang ups I'd have with an FFL dealer. And yes, it's all for tracking. I don't do anything illegal that is worth tracking me.

I wear different clothes I guess. I travel and do most things with a zippered pocket on my shirt. So I just zip it in my man tit pocket and forget about it until I can put it in a safe when I don't need it. We're generally talking 6 hours max for me as I have no interest in crossing oceans.

Well, Kristi, looks like you are deceiving us on yet another issue.

The truth is you can fly without a Real ID. You can use a passport, or about a dozen other identification cards. The DHS says so on its website here: Alternative forms of ID:

Difference Between Real ID and PASSPORTS

Some will say that the Real ID is no big deal because it’s no different than a passport. Here is how a passport is different than a Real ID:
Passports are issued by the federal government; Drivers’ Licenses are issued by the States
Passports are required for travel to foreign countries; the Real ID would be used to travel within your own state or interstate travel
Passports do NOT have your residential address printed on them

I would be for requiring a passport or RealID to register to vote, and to cast the vote.

Also make it mandatory for a semi-permanent ink or dye that is applied to the finger of voters to avoid double voting.

Article I, Section 4, Clause 1

“The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations...”

This clause is often referred to as the Elections Clause. It gives state legislatures the initial authority to regulate the mechanics of federal elections (such as timing, location, and procedures), but also gives Congress the power to override those regulations.

So even though the states regulate elections, Congress could force them to require ID and to apply ink to the finger of voters.

I not like it, but I've been finger printed about 3 time (no crime). It was to make travel easier domestically (TSA Pre) not having to take shoes off and computers out and global entry to just trot though US Customs and just say hello, first in line etc..

Most illegals have likely been finger printed at some point. ID is trivial thought. I can bring a passport, drivers license, FOID card, FAA license, SS card plus 10 credit cards with my name on it to back everything up. Passport is the only one I cary for travel, but I'd bring it for voting if needed.

You know the reason the US is so strict with passport application? They need other countries to trust American citizens. Place like Europe don't want us to overstay and get free college. Apparently here we just don't give a shit.

We need to frankly just stop mail in voting besides military DEPLOYED abroad. I think that's the bigger issue. You only vote the day of. I know fire fighters and nurses have 12 and 24 hour shifts that day, but they get allowed a one hour break whether they decide to vote or not. That will allow them to schedule the shift so they're not short staffed. Make voting hours 5am-11:59pm.

If there is any other mail in voting you have to get a notarized letter as to the reason why. It has to be turned in before election day with the ballot. The vote isn't counted until they run a check. That means calling a hotel or company and asking if John Doe was out of town. If that's not verified, the vote doesn't count.

I could go on and on, but it's so easy to stop voter fraud. In 2025 it's a joke we should even be talking about this. We're too advanced of a society. I can accept a loss if my person didn't win, but it shouldn't ever be in question if the voting was legit.

Huh? I wear a shirt that looks decent and has a chest pocket the passport won't fall out of. Wear the same outfit there and back. No inconvenience at all. I wear the same black outfit every trip in case I spill anything on me. Have sink suds and can wash it if there's no laundry facilities. Literally no inconvenience. Clearing TSA is faster too. No side eye from employees or extra searches.

Actually met with our attorney today, he said don't get the real ID, just use the passport. We sold our current house officially today. The hassle of getting a real ID he said is not worth it if you have a passport. Just keep your passport up to date pre 6 months expiration.
