I'm going to derail this thread - watch "Rare Exports," if for no other reason than to indulge the perverted (in a largely non-sexual way) aspects of Christmas.

Movie theaters suck in that you are surrounded by vaxxed spike protein shedders, the seats and floor might be filthy, and the concessions suck.

Positives are that seating has vastly improved.

However, prices are high enough that I can buy the 4K movie and show it on my own screen for less than 1/6 of the cost of bringing the fambly to the theater.

The last movie I really wanted to see in the theater, Apollo 11, wasn't even being shown on the main screen in full resolution. I had to buy the Blu-ray and it is phenomenal - 8K scans from 16-perf 70 mm negatives for some footage. And we get to make our own popcorn with gobs of melted butter.

@Wookieman - you're building your new house. Look into AVSforum for recs to set up a home theater. You're handy, so you can do it for relatively ($20K) cheap to probably get a $100K theater. A lot of it is, surprisingly, sound, not video. I'd recommend JVC for the PJ, audio is to taste, although Rythmik, Danley, and JTR have some pretty good offerings as far as bowel-shaking (nod to Cake) bass.

I drop in that forum from time to time. Don't post though. Not at that stage yet, but definitely doing an ATMOS setup for sound. We're doing the basement kind of industrial with just black spray on the joist. No drywall or drop ceiling.

I have 110" now in the basement. 5.1, but still is better than a movie theater in my opinion. You didn't derail really. It was kind of the point. I guess I may have labeled the thread title poorly. I guess I was looking for what movies people recently went to but also how you watch them. Could be a home theater or your living room. I really don't understand how theaters exist anymore. Even a 72" with soundbar and sub is better and an easy cheap option as your main tv.

I just just watch movies I already have anyway. Can't recall a movie I wanted to go to the theater for. The only one I would go to is almost 40 minutes away, serves food and booze with servers. So it's more like a restaurant experience and the food is above average. Not great by any means.

The reason I mention booze is that those theaters are run by adults. Better because there's 21+ and keep an eye on younger employees. Most theaters in my area are run by teenagers. Not matinees but in the evening it's 18 and under running the show. The sound is never the same as you're putting a teenager in charge of at least a 5 figure and maybe 6 figure system they have no clue how to operate. They have it automated for the most part on the install, but I think the kids fuck around with settings.

Had to leave a movie and request a refund one time 10 years ago or so. Some idiot clearly bumped the high frequency settings to retarded levels. I'm a drummer will cymbals crashing when I play. It was such an awful experience. Kicked up my tinnitus for the next three days to unbearable levels. Losing sleep. I want control of my sound hence why I stopped visiting theaters.

It was OK, I didn't like it very much, it's a bullshit premise.

Yeah, the kids will get you to the movies. I think I'm 2018-19ish last time I've been. I forget the movie. Probably not adulting well, but we just do the dump and run at our kids ages if they want to see a movie when it comes out. Oldest is 14 but looks 18, so I don't really worry about it.

I stopped watching TV, so I legit don't know what movies are coming out. If I do see an ad I really have no interest. I don't know if that writers strike and covid caused a logjam or the whole Will Smith slapping a comic (generally) Chris Rock on stage. I think the industry is dying. Comedy clubs are popping up in towns near me. With Rogan, like him or not, I think he's creating a legit bigger industry than Hollywood with comedy. And they can still make movies. It's cheaper and they can make more. It's not some action movie with all sorts of shit you have to do daily to shoot.

Back to the Star Wars thread I just responded on. I think Hollywood has been gay forever. That's why I think comics are booming. Are there gay ones, for sure. But most are men and strong straight women. Hell we/us/whoever got Ellen to quit. An unfunny queer.

I think comedy is the future in a world where the agenda being pushed is such trash from an entertainment/movie standpoint. Hence I generally only rewatch stuff from pre-2005 for the most part. Stuff like Caddy Shack. I mean come on, that is one of the most sexist and funny movies even though I'm not a big fan of Chevy Chase. Someone would have to be gay now to remake that film, which god forbid they'll probably do.

Haven't watched any, but knowing the names and the few ads I maybe saw on youtube, they don't seem gay at least.

I'm waiting for the day when movie releases come out for streaming immediately. The studio revenue would probably double. If I really want to see something, at least where I live, it's worth $100-150 to not leave the house if I get unlimited replay for life. I'd spend that much with 3 kids at a theater anyway. I can drink without having to drive. I can pause and take a shit. Grill a steak. I have a small movie theater popcorn maker.

I really don't see the draw of the movie theater especially if the content that comes out is gay and below average.

I'm contractually obligated to watch MCU and most SF movies :)
Deadpool series is cringeworthy action comedy, given a pan-sexual main character. (Yeah, I never read the comics, so I had to look that one up.) I had a few spit-takes watching all of them, and I get a woodie watching Morena Baccarin.

I can't watch the Alien movies anymore. I get PTSD watching people get slithering snakes entering mouth parts.

Either they are released simultaneously or after a few weeks. It's more of the former than the latter, lately.

Never was into comic magazines. So I frankly don't have an interest in any of the movies. My kids like Deadpool because of the swearing. That doesn't bother me as the school never calls me and they don't swear in front of me. Good kids.

Alien and horror type films I find comedic and am laughing most the time. I'm a sick fucker I guess. When you know it's fake, especially bad fake, it's hysterical to me. On par with comedy. It's the drama and romantic type movies I just walk away and unload a copious amount of vomit. Not really, but I can't stand that shit.

There are a few good dramas. No Country For Old Men. Javier is good in that. I actually don't know what you'd call that movie type wise really. Daniel Day Lewis is overhyped in my opinion. I'm just more of a comedy guy even if it's bad. Sometimes fun bad is better than serious movies that suck.

Well there's no new movies compared to the past. Or they're failing miserably at marketing them. I haven't see shit come out in theaters and streaming the same day. I'm not actively looking either. Between covid and the strike the content went away or to streaming services I'm not paying for. So my blinders are on.

I watched Gladiator 2 with my son.
It was entertaining, if not spectacular. The plot was a bit thin, but I guess it worked. The visuals were amazing.

Just watched the trailer. I don't get Denzel being in it. I'm an audio guy and at least the trailer was too modern sounding. Didn't feel epic at all. I'll eventually watch it. Not saying your take is bad having not watched it, but it's kind of the reason for this thread. 1-10 or A-F how would you grade it?

Also with it coming out in November I never even heard of it. More evidence of a dying movie industry in my opinion. No one even mentioned in passing saying did you hear about the new Gladiator movie? Thanksgiving and 2 xmas parties. Hollywood is dead.

I haven't been to big screen movie for many years. I do love them when I go, but with whatever, just haven't been. When my wife was working and I had an afternoon off, I would sneak to the IMAX for a show. They're really expensive now, and I have a 120 inch home theater with high end sound, so less incentive.

I just watched this again over the weekend. These Hollywood types were connected - they knew what was up. The Matrix, Fight Club, V for Vendetta, 7even, etc. These were metaphors, and if you believe the morality of satanists, they must tell you what they're going to do, and if you do nothing or agree with it, then you deserve what's coming.

Watched this in 3D at the theater.

It certainly was better compared to recent ones. More like the original. They kept it to the basics. Only shitty part was the Rancorsaurus that Spielberg obviously included as an homage to Star Wars. It was the crappiest JP/JW dino ever. Fortunately, it mostly was shown in the very end.
