United Germany has a military that is 1/4 the size of the FRG Bundeswehr alone in 1989, and far less equipped. That's NOT counting the Landeswehr or Reserves of that era. .That's how pitifully understrength and underfunded the German military is.
Think about it: his demand that NATO countries bring their military spending to 5% (from current 2% at best)
All bullshit. We can't even afford to raise our military spending to 5% GDP. Europe definitely can't for sure.
But it makes a nice pretext for the US to withdraw because they can't make that.

What is the point of military spending if your country is filled with people inviting invaders into your home?

We are at 3.45% and Poland is at 4.2-4.5% iirc. Zee Germanz saved so much by shrinking their military over the last 30 years they can totally afford to splurge now.
At least 2 NATO countries - Lithuania and Estonia - have already committed to spend 5%.

Feb 10 (Reuters) - The Trump administration plans to push European allies to buy more American weapons for Ukraine
WASHINGTON — Congressional Republicans are pushing for at least $100 billion in additional defense spending during the next decade to boost the military’s budget and advance President Donald Trump’s agenda. The two chambers are working on two different budget resolutions that will direct the House Armed Services Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee to develop legislation detailing how the money will be spent. The Senate Budget Committee’s resolution calls for a $150 billion increase in defense spending to expand the Navy, strengthen the defense industrial base, build an integrated air and missile defense system and continue the modernization of strategic nuclear forces. About $20 billion would also increase funding for the Coast Guard.
The House Budget Committee’s fiscal blueprint, released Wednesday, proposes a $100 billion spending cap for the military. The committee will debate the measure Thursday, and the Senate Budget Committee began its deliberations Wednesday. Both resolutions are part of a Republican effort to enact Trump’s agenda...
United States President Donald Trump plans to dramatically ramp up weapons sales to India this year, including supersonic F-35 fighter jets, following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
After Musk gets through with the audit, they'll find enough money savings in the DOD to fund whatever they want - and more.

Still must spend 5% of the GDP - such is Trump's requirement for all NATO countries. Our MIC will be drowning in $$.
